This could end up being one of the premier Group of Five matchups of the season.
UTSA is 10th in the HERO Sports 2024 Group of Five Top 25 Media Poll this week after beating Kennesaw State 28-16. The Roadrunners are one of the favorites to win the AAC.
But Texas State is also believed to be one of the top teams in its respective conference, the Sun Belt. The Bobcats barely beat Lamar, 34-27, at home in Week 1.
Both teams have hopes of making it to the College Football Playoff. And a win this week would go a long way in getting there.

UTSA vs. Texas State Prediction
I predict Texas State will win and cover the spread at -1.5. I also project this game will go Under 64.5 total points.
This is such a difficult game to pick a winner. I think UTSA has a strong roster, and I expect the Roadrunners to be tough in the AAC. But despite Texas State’s struggles a week ago, I’m going to stick to my preseason predictions.
Both of these offenses have some playmakers. For Texas State, Jordan McCloud is a veteran quarterback who was the Sun Belt Player of the Year for JMU in 2023. He had 238 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception on 21-for-30 passing last week. The Bobcats also have running back Ismail Mahdi and wide receiver Joey Hobert, two G5 Preseason All-Americans.
In his first start of the season, UTSA quarterback Owen McCown completed 28 of 38 passes for 340 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions to go with a rushing touchdown. The Roadrunners also allowed just 16 points and 253 yards of total offense to Kennesaw State, which is now an FBS program.
But I think the key to this game will be Texas State’s defense, which should bounce back after last week. I think the Bobcats find a way to force a few key turnovers and set up Texas State’s offense with good field position.
This game will be close, and I think the defenses will be a bit better than some people expect in this contest. But considering the Bobcats are at home, I think they have a slight edge here.
