Navy Head Coach Brian Newberry’s Background
Before becoming Navy’s head coach, Newberry helped the Midshipmen’s defense be one of the top units in the Group of Five.
He was Navy’s defensive coordinator from 2019-22. During that time, the Midshipmen were often in the top 30 in the FBS in multiple statistical categories, like when they allowed the third-fewest rushing yards per game in the country (88.9) in 2022.
Before that, he was a defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at several other places, which makes sense considering he played defensive back at Baylor in the 1990s.
He was a DC and DBs coach at Kennesaw State (2015-18) and Washington & Lee (2004-06 and 2001-02). He was also a defensive coordinator at Northern Michigan (2012) and a DC and linebackers coach at Sewanee (2011). He worked with defensive backs at Elon (2007-10) and Lehigh (2003) as well. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Southern Arkansas in 1999.
