Last December, five days after SMU head coach Chad Morris left for the Arkansas job, the Mustangs hired Sonny Dykes as his replacement. Out was one Texan in Morris, a native of Edgewood who grew up in nearby Dallas, and in was another Texan in Dykes, a native of Big Spring who grew up in nearby Lubbock.
Morris and Dykes are two of 13 active FBS head coaches from The Lone Star State, the most among all states. Of those 13, however, only two are coaching one of the 12 FBS teams in Texas: Texas Tech's Kliff Kingsbury and Dykes. Memphis' Mike Norvell and Tulsa's Philip Montgomery are the only ones from the same city, Dallas, which is one of nine cities in the entire country with at least two head coaches.
