Toyota Stadium, Home Of The FCS Championship, Could See Renovations
Whispers were aplenty earlier this year in Frisco in the days leading up to the FCS national championship — the future of the title game in Frisco, other cities being interested in hosting, what day/weekend the game should be played, and Toyota Stadium undergoing possible renovations.
Earlier this week, the Dallas Business Journal reported more details of potential renovations for the stadium, including new suites and media areas.
A May 28 filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation calls for a 130,000-square-foot expansion “of premium product including clubs and suites” as well as new broadcast and press areas. New canopy lighting could also be added.
A source close to FC Dallas, who asked not to be named, called the filing a first step toward a potentially bigger project announcement but declined to elaborate.
The TDLR filing listed an estimated cost of $130 million for the project. It indicated construction could begin in January and be completed in August 2027.
Frisco has hosted the FCS championship since the 2010 season, and it isn’t leaving Frisco anytime soon. The city has an option on its current contract to host the championship through the 2026 season (January 2027 game), an option that will very likely be used.
Toyota Stadium underwent renovation in the mid-2010s, adding a soccer hall of fame that also came with new locker rooms designed for football teams on the south side of the stadium. The renovations did knock stadium capacity down from about 20,000 to a little less than 18,000, which has led to even more packed stands and standing-room-only sections.
This year’s FCS championship game was estimated to bring in $9.9 million in direct economic impact, a number that jumps to $16 million after taking indirect and induced spending into account. For comparison, the Frisco Bowl was expected to have a $1.9 million economic impact.
Upgrades to the east side of the stadium (opposite of the press box) have been discussed to include suites and more shade for fans.
While not official yet, wheels are in motion to get those renovations underway soon.
