Welcome to the 2021 FCS Jersey Countdown.
Leading up to Week 0 games on Aug. 28, HERO Sports is going to name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-0. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on the 2020 fall-2021 spring season.
The 99-0 countdown central page can be found here.
Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2020 fall-2021 spring rosters.
16: Marshel Martin, TE (So.) — Sacramento State
Martin is an athletic tight end who is dangerous after the catch.
As just a redshirt freshman in Sac State’s offense that averaged 35.7 points per game in 2019, Martin had 39 catches for 550 yards and seven touchdowns. The seven scores tied for the fourth-most among FCS tight ends.
The 6-foot-2, 209-pounder was named to the All-Big Sky Conference Second Team and earned HERO Sports Freshman All-American honors.
After the Hornets did not play in 2020-21 due to COVID, Martin enters this fall a First Team All-Conference preseason selection and a Third Team All-American by HERO Sports and Stats Perform. Martin is ranked the third-best returning tight end in the FCS.
Sac State has a new starting quarterback this year as it looks to defend its 2019 conference title. The Hornets have several weapons to work with, including Martin, WR Pierre Williams, and RB Elijah Dotson.
