FCS Football Recaps – Week 1

FCS Football Recaps: North Dakota State does it's thing, Eastern Washington Rises

Here's how the Top 25 FCS Football programs fared this past weekend… Your team not in the Top 25? View the Results of Every Game [divider]

HeroSports #1

North Dakota State LogoNorth Dakota State

Result: 34-24 Win at Iowa State

Last Week: North Dakota State got paid $350,000 to beat up on FBS Iowa State to start their season. Kansas in 2010, Minnesota in 2011, Colorado State in 2012, Kansas State last season, and now Iowa State — this was the fifth year in a row the Bison have collected a paycheck to embarrass an FBS school in their own stadium. How many of these "upsets" is it gonna take to before they stop being upsets?

HeroSports #2Eastern Washington LogoEastern Washington

Result: 56-35 Win over Sam Houston State, 41-9 Win over Montana Western Last Week:  The Eagles and Bearkats both looked a little sloppy early and went into the locker room tied at 21. The second half was all Eastern though, as the Eagles outscored Sam Houston State 35-14 in the final half an hour to win the first game of the 2014-15 college football season. HeroSports #3Eastern Illinois LogoEastern Illinois

Result: 42-20 Loss at Minnesota Last Week: Junior Jalen Whitlow got the start, but redshirt senior Andrew Manley scored all three touchdowns for the Panthers in their loss at FBS Minnesota. Not exactly the result the Panthers were hoping for in the first game post-Jimmy Garoppolo. The FCS season starts next week against Southern Illinois. View Eastern Illinois Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #4

Southeastern LouisianaSoutheastern Louisiana

Result: 44-3 Win over Jacksonville Last Week: Senior QB Bryan Bennett scored on an 89-yard pass, an 83-yard run, and a 73-yard pass. The defense allowed 2.7 yards per play and three total points on the day. A good day to be a Lion. View Southeastern Louisiana Team Page [divider]

Result: 54-20 Loss at Toledo Last Week: The Wildcats' Sean Goldrich had an okay day throwing the ball, 27 of 39 for 291 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 INTs. They need to figure out their ground game though – 31 attempts for 37 yards is not the way to win a football game. View New Hampshire Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #6

Jacksonville State LogoJacksonville State

Result: 45-7 Loss at Michigan State Last Week: Well, the Gamecocks knew what they were getting themselves into when they scheduled the team that beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl last time they were on a football field. Turn the page and move on, they travel to Chattanooga next weekend. View Jacksonville State [divider]

HeroSports #7Coastal Carolina Logo

Coastal Carolina

Result: 31-16 Win at The Citadel  Last Week: Alex Ross threw a touchdown pass for the 15th game in a row, extending his own school record. The Citadel didn't score a touchdown until the Chanticleers were already up 28-3 in the fourth quarter. View Coastal Carolina Team Page [divider]

McNeese State Logo McNeese State

Result: N/A  Last Week: The Cowboys were inactive this week. They open the season at Nebraska next Saturday.   View McNeese State Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #9South Dakota StateSouth Dakota State

Result: 38-18 Loss at Missouri

Last Week: Zach Zenner started the season with a bang, and a 75-yard touchdown run, after a bobbled snap on South Dakota State's first offensive play. Then Mizzou pulled away. The Jackrabbits had a couple chances to make this more of a contest, but turned the ball over twice in the red zone in the second half.

Tennessee State LogoTennessee State

Result: 58-6 Win over Edward Waters Last Week: Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year Anthony Bass registered four tackles, two sacks, 2.5 tackles for a loss, and an interception in the Tigers' blowout win. He was the MVP of the defense — the defense that allowed only 76 yards on the day. View Tennessee State Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #11

Montana LogoMontana

Result: 17-12 Loss at Wyoming

Last Week: The game at Wyoming featured two lightning delays which lasted nearly an hour. The Griz pass defense looked solid, only allowing Wyoming 92 yards on 21 attempts, but the rushing offense needs work. Montana gained 42 yards on 19 carries, and no Montana player had more than 20 yards on the ground.

Villanova Logo Villanova

Result: 27-26 2OT Loss at Syracuse Last Week: Josh Robertson led all passers with 199 yards through the air on the day, and also led all rushers with 133 on the ground. His 134th rushing yard would have won the Wildcats the game, but his two point conversion attempt in double overtime fell just short. View Villanova Team Page [divider]

Sam Houston State LogoSam Houston State

Result: 35-14 Loss at Eastern Washington, 51-20 Win over Alabama State Last Week: The Bearkats scored three touchdowns on three huge second-quarter plays and went into the half tied with Eastern at 21. It's tough to win when you commit 15 more penalties than your opponent for 144 more penalty yards though. The Bearkats bounced back from the loss with a 31-point beatdown of Alabama State at home. HeroSports #14

Towson LogoTowson

Result: 31-27 Loss to Central Connecticut Last Week: The lead changed six times in this back and forth opening day matchup, but Towson ultimately came out on the wrong end. The Tigers need to figure out their passing game, quick. They averaged 4.8 yards per attempt through the air, compared to 5.6 ypc on the ground. Not good. View Towson Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #15

Northern Iowa LogoNorthern Iowa

Result: 31-23 Loss at Iowa Last week: Junior QB Sawyer Kollmorgen completed 17 of 37 passes for a career-high 380 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 INTs, and gave the Panthers a chance to win it in the fourth quarter. Ultimately, it wasn't enough though, and UNI lost by eight. View Northern Iowa Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #16Liberty LogoLiberty

Result: 56-29 Loss at North Carolina Last Week: Liberty took a one point lead midway through the third quarter against North Carolina. Then over the next four minutes, the Tarheels scored 28 points to put the game out of reach. View Liberty Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #17Southern Illinois LogoSouthern Illinois

Result: 45-0 Win over Taylor Last Week: The Salukis played about as close to a perfect game as you're likely to see this season. The offense put up 546 yards while the defense allowed only 141. NAIA school Taylor was clearly overmatched. View Southern Illinois Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #18Fordham LogoFordham

Result: 52-23 Win over St. Francis Last Week: Chase Edmonds set a Fordham freshman record for rushing yards with 181. He added another 119 yards returning kickoffs for an even 300 on the day.   View Fordham Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #19William & Mary LogoWilliam & Mary

Result: 34-9 Loss at Virginia Tech Last Week: William & Mary looked great early, forcing Virginia Tech into a three-and-out in the first possession and promptly went on an 84-yard drive, which concluded in a touchdown. They kept it tight until the final frame, but the Hokies put the game away with two TDs. View William & Mary Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #20Bethune Cookman LogoBethune-Cookman

Result: 14-12 Win at Florida International University

Last Week: The Bethune-Cookman defense held Florida International to under 200 yards of total offense and stopped the Panthers on a fourth quarter two point conversion attempt which would have tied the game. The Wildcats have a bye this week, then play Grambling State in their home-opener.

Princeton LogoPrinceton

Result: N/A Last Week: The Tigers were inactive this week. They open their season September 20 against San Diego.   View Princeton Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #22Tennessee Martin LogoUT-Martin

Result: 59-14 Loss at Kentucky Last Week: Kentucky might not be the best team in the SEC, but they are an SEC team. The Wildcats scored at will on Saturday, and punched in eight TDs in their 12 drives. Try not to read too much into the loss, Skyhawk fans — UT-Martin travels to Central Arkansas next weekend to kick of their FCS schedule. View UT-Martin Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #23

Youngstown LogoYoungstown State

Result: 28-17 Loss at Illinois Last week: The Penguins outgained the Fighting Illini in their inter-division matchup, and even held a three-point lead in the fourth quarter. Illinois scored three TDs in the final frame though, and prevented the upset. View Youngstown State Team Page [divider]

South Carolina StateSouth Carolina State

Result: 63-0 Win over Benedict Last week: Adrian Kollock Jr had an efficient day throwing the ball, completing 15 of his 18 passing attempts for 160 yards. It was all about the ground game for South Carolina though. Seven Bulldogs gained at least 30 yards on the ground in the game, and they scored eight rushing touchdowns to boot. View South Carolina State Team Page [divider]

HeroSports #25

Maine LogoMaine

Result: 10-6 Win over Norfolk State

Last Week: Neither team broke 200 yards of total offense in this defensive struggle. Norfolk State kicked field goals on their first two possessions, but didn't have a drive longer than 16 yards for the rest of the game. Maine's lone TD drive was a seven-play, 81-yarder in the second quarter that ultimately won them the game.
