Kent State didn’t play as well as some hoped in Kenni Burns’ first season as head coach.

The Golden Flashes went 1-11 in 2023 and were winless in MAC play and against FBS opponents in general. But they hope to bounce back in 2024 as Burns aims to build the program as he wants.

Kenni Burns signed a one-year contract extension this offseason, so his current deal will end after the 2028 season. He made $527,100 in total pay in 2023, according to USA Today.

Kenni Burns is 40 years old.

Kent State Head Coach Kenni Burns’ Background

Burns was a successful offensive position coach for more than a decade, which led to him being offered the Kent State job.

In 2022, his last year as Minnesota’s associate head coach and running backs coach, he helped the Gophers finish 16th in the country with 207.3 rushing yards per game.

He coached running backs at Minnesota for six years. He worked with the same position group at Western Michigan in 2016.

Before that, he was Wyoming’s wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator in 2014, his first FBS job. He also coached wideouts at North Dakota State for four years prior to that.

From 2008-09, he coached tight ends and fullbacks at Southern Illinois. He began his career at Division II Millersville while mentoring running backs.
