The University of Maine and the FCS community is mourning Tuesday after the news of the death of true freshman Darius Minor, who collapsed during a freshman summer workout in the early afternoon and could not be resuscitated at the field by first responders.
Minor had only been on campus three weeks, taking his first classes as an incoming freshman, while also taking part in typical freshman preseason conditioning drills. He was a native of Locust Grove, Va. and played his high school football at Orange County H.S., exhibiting impressive leadership characteristics as a team captain while also gaining a reputation as one of Central Virginia's fastest athletes.
Just this Monday, Minor had proudly Tweeted out a screenshot of his freshman bio page on the University of Maine's athletic webpage. He had chosen the Black Bears just prior to the February national signing period, thanking the coaching staff for giving him a shot at Division I football.
The school put out a press release just past 7 p.m. No cause of death is known yet.
"Words cannot express the grief we have following this tragic loss," Maine head coach Joe Harasymiak said in a statement, as he was with the Maine contingent at CAA Media Days in Baltimore today. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Darius' family and friends during this terrible time."
