Var’Keyes Gumms is heading to the SEC.
The former North Texas tight end and Conference USA rising star said Sunday on Twitter he’s committing to Arkansas. He announced he was entering the transfer portal on April 10.
Gumms’ other offers he tweeted about were mostly Power Five schools. He had offers from Oregon, BYU, Colorado, Utah, West Virginia, and Cal as well as FAU of the C-USA.
Gumms, at 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, set UNT’s single-season records for catches (34) and yards (458) by a tight end as a redshirt freshman to go with five touchdowns. He also led all tight ends in the CUSA and was 15th in the country among tight ends in yards. He was on the All-Conference USA first team as well as All-American freshman teams.
UNT is in the midst of a head coaching change. After going 7-7 and losing to UTSA in the CUSA Championship in 2022, North Texas fired Seth Littrell. The program hired Eric Morris, who was previously Washington State’s offensive coordinator, as its next head coach.
Arkansas needed pass-catching help. Five of the Razorbacks’ top six receivers last year are no longer on the roster. That includes Trey Knox, who was the team’s leading tight end but transferred to South Carolina this offseason.
