Southern Miss football player M.J. Daniels died on Tuesday night during an off-campus incident, the athletics department announced Wednesday morning.
He was reportedly shot and killed in his car.
“The University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of Athletics mourn the loss of M.J. Daniels whose life was lost Tuesday evening during an incident that occurred off campus,” USM said in a press release. “We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
“The University of Southern Mississippi Student Counseling Services has been made available to members of the Golden Eagle football program and individuals close to the university,” USM added. “Out of respect for the family and all impacted in this matter, the University and Athletic Department will have no further comment at this time.”
Daniels, who’s from Lucedale, Mississippi, was going into his senior year in 2024. The former Ole Miss transfer cornerback tied the team lead with three interceptions and added 29 tackles in 12 games.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of MJ Daniels,” Southern Miss head coach Will Hall wrote on Twitter. “His smile was infectious and lit up the room. Please keep MJ’s loved ones and our Southern Miss family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
