Welcome to the 2021 FCS Jersey Countdown.
Leading up to Week 0 games on Aug. 28, HERO Sports is going to name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-0. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on the 2020 fall-2021 spring season.
The 99-0 countdown central page can be found here.
Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2020 fall-2021 spring rosters.
49: Brock Mogensen, LB (So.) — South Dakota
Mogensen emerged as one of USD’s top defensive players in 2019 during his redshirt freshman year. He got better every week as the season progressed, but the breakout player’s year was cut short with an injury that sidelined him for the remaining two games.
In the 10 games played, including eight starts, Mogensen tallied 56 tackles.
Mogensen picked up where he left off during the spring season. The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder had 38 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, and two passes defended as the Coyotes played in only four games.
His 9.5 tackles per game ranked second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference as Mogensen was named to the All-Conference Second Team.
USD has a strong duo at linebacker heading into 2021 with Mogensen and Jack Cochrane. The Coyotes went from 32.4 points allowed a game in 2019 to 24.0 in the shortened spring season. With a full slate of MVFC games this fall plus non-conference games against FBS Kansas and the Big Sky’s Northern Arizona and Cal Poly, USD’s defensive improvements will be key in the program getting back into the playoff discussion.
