Bowl season is officially upon us as teams from across the country begin to make preparations for one last showdown on the gridiron. Some fans are so excited they've already snatched up their school's allotment of bowl tickets in one day.

On the other hand, nearly 50 teams will watch the games from their television sets like the rest of us, and for the four squads below, they have yet to feast at the postseason table as members of the FBS.

Here are the only four schools in college football to have never made a bowl game, although for some there's reason to believe the postseason isn't that far off in the distance.

Texas State
Oh the irony.
In 2014 the Bobcats went 7-5 but were passed over by the bowls. The past two postseasons, however, three 5-7 teams went bowling due to a lack of six-plus-win teams. Unfortunately, Texas State went 3-9 in 2015 and 2-10 a season ago.
This season was equally rough as Everett Withers' squad went 2-10 once again, which could place him on the hot seat considering his career 4-20 mark at the school.

UMass
The Minutemen's transition from the MAC to an FBS independent isn't exactly off to a raucous beginning.
Despite never winning more than three games in the Mid-American between 2012 and 2015, UMass decided to go independent starting in 2016. The squad is a combined 6-18 over the past two seasons although it did notch one of the program's biggest wins this year in upsetting BYU in Provo.
The team's 2018 schedule is already set, and with a pair of FCS foes on the slate along with two other teams on this list, perhaps next year will be the magical season that sends UMass to a bowl.

Charlotte
The 49ers have only been playing football since 2015, and its decision to dive right into the deep end of Conference USA is admirable.
Charlotte was only two wins shy of bowl eligibility in 2016, and considering how poor the bottom half of the conference is right now there are certainly plenty of opportunities for wins next season.

Coastal Carolina
2017 was the year Coastal Carolina graduated from the FCS to the FBS, and the school wasn't eligible for the postseason this year even if it had won six-plus games. Teams in the Sun Belt should be worried about the Chanticleers, however, as they were a perineal power at the lower division having gone to the FCS playoffs every season between 2012 and 2015.
Moreover, Coastal only need look at Georgia Southern and Appalachian State for reasons to believe they can contend right away as each of those schools have gone bowling since joining the conference in 2015.
