Southern Utah Defensive Reputation Lures New Recruit

Southern Utah Defensive Reputation Lures New Recruit

Southern Utah has three legitimate NFL Draft prospects on the defensive side of the ball. There are dozens of Power Five Conference schools that can’t come close to saying that.  Defensive end James Cowser, safety Miles Killebrew Southern Utah Logoand cornerback LeShaun Sims are highly regarded prospects and helped Southern Utah make the FCS playoffs this year, as well as win its first Big Sky Championship.

A defensive trio out of Arbor View HS in Las Vegas, Nev. are the first three commitments for the Thunderbirds. This week, two of them–DB Alex Sims and DE Harold Bell–joined 3-star linebacker and prep teammate Bishop Jones as Southern Utah recruits. They are the first three on board, but many more will come as the powerhouse begins focusing on its incoming signing class.

“Maybe in a couple of years it’ll be Bishop, Harold and me that change the defense from good to great,” Sims told HERO Sports. “They as a unit had a great defense this year … You notice those three (Cowser, Killebrew and L. Sims-no relation) when you are watching. They just make unbelievable plays every week. It’s not how big the school you go to is, it’s about how much heart you have and how hard you’re willing to work to achievve your goals. And with those three you can tell they are leaders and carried that teams this year.”

Sims (6-0/180), Bell (6-4/250) and Jones (6-3/215) wish they could be on campus immediately.

“It’s very exciting for me,” Jones told HERO Sports. “We’ve always been really close and Alex has been close to committing for awhile. To finally know it’s official is pretty exciting. I know the abilities God has blessed us with and the future for us is promising, in my opinion. I’ve had an offer from Southern Utah for a while now so I’ve been following them very closely these last two seasons. I knew the team was the real deal after they barely lost to Utah State. The coaching staff is amazing. And what they do on both sides of the ball is extremely prolific. They produce great players …. Knowing they produced those (three) players is extremely exciting to me. I just can’t wait to get in there and begin to learn under coach Warren.”

Sims and Jones were beyond thrilled with their school choice, that was abundantly clear in discussing Southern Utah. Sims will bring a physical and athletic presence in the secondary, and

“They must be doing something right down there,” Sims continued. “It isn’t just a school that has football as a sport, they have a program down there with so much tradition.”
